Little Dickens

If God is at the front door, the devil is at the back door.
~ C.G. Jung

We have many cats, all with symbolic names.  One, as a kitten, was into all kinds of mischief, and I wanted to name him Devil.  But my wife didn’t like that name.  Then one day I heard her say to him, “Come here you little Dickens.”  That became his name.  He of course turned into an angel after that.

The next cat we adopted I named Gabriel after the angel.  Of course he is not terribly angelic in his demands, but I wanted the balance of the devil and the angel to acknowledge their presence in our lives.

Within us and in society live the trickster, the court jester, and the little Dickens.  When we acknowledge their presence in us and our lives, we remain in control of our behavior.  When we deny them we act out and look for excuses for our behavior, and they make trouble for us.  When you literally accept the possibility that you could become a criminal, it is far less likely you will become one.

Accept the “little Dickens” in you so your shadow
won’t cause you any trouble!

Peace,
Bernie
