  • Love Blindness

“Love isn’t blind; it just only sees what matters.”
    ~ William Curry

What makes a lover blind?  What is it a lover can’t see?  Is blindness always a bad thing?

What do you see when you start the day and step into your living room?  Is the first thing you see the mess from the night before and what has to be done, or the potential for the day ahead?

Wake up to life and start looking at what is before you.  You can select what you are blind to.  Loving life and being blind to its faults and problems does not mean you are not aware of them.  It does not prohibit you from trying to change things for the better.  But it does mean you are not controlled by them and made bitter and resentful by them.

When you are in the slowest line at the checkout counter and the clerk stops to page the manager after you have already emptied your cart onto the belt, and you are ready to scream, use your love blindness. See through loving eyes and watch what happens to your sight.

Spread the affliction of love blindness and hope that people don’t find a cure.

    Peace,
    ~ Bernie

    Tears of Joy

The most wasted of all days
is that on which one has not laughed.

    ~ SEBASTIAN-ROCH
    NICOLAS DE CHAMFORT

What is the point of laughing?  Laughter changes our body chemistry, makes us feel young again, and transforms relationships.  It is very hard to be in conflict with someone who makes you laugh.  They go from being your enemy to being a friend, even if you still question their sanity and behavior.

Why do tears become a part of laughter when the laughter is really uncontrolled?  I think whether we laugh or cry, tears are a healing release and wash away our troubles.  The more we store within us, and the less we react, the more harm we do to our bodies.  Tears of any kind cleanse the soul.

Cry your tears of joy and sorrow and help your body to heal by eliminating the poisons that reside within.

    Peace,
    ~ Bernie

    Q & A with Bernie – November 8, 2021

    Question for Bernie:

    Hi Bernie!

I’ll be sending you drawings & an update note soon (will include notes to tell you what’s happened overall with my cancer dx and health as you requested).

They do tumor markers next Tuesday; I think that is the 9th. I have the PET scan at the end of November; my oncologist pushed it back again.

She says even if the scan is clear there can be cancer in my body, so I need to get back to doing your visualization. I’ve told them I will beat the cancer and they seem very determined to tell me I’m going to have it, to “live with cancer” even though my tumor markers have gone from 149 to 67 from the summer to now, 5 months of medicine.

I know I can’t expect them to be crunchy granola types. They are very helpful and do a lot for me. I’m trying not to take it personally—their approach is to continue to tell me that the cancer will be in my body. I am NOT going to spend my time trying to get them to drink my Kool-Aid, and I respect their hard work, I know they see so much serious stuff that I could never handle.

I started to do a sketch for you, preparing to draw it in crayons; it gave me a lot of hope. I drew a tiny person (me) held up by a person’s 2 fingers and being looked at through a big magnifying glass and a rainbow coming through the other side. The PET scan opening is ROUND – so I think that is what I was drawing and “the team” examining the results closing, but good results coming back. Five big people overall were surrounding the tiny me. That sketch gave me a lot of hope – I have a feeling the scans will come back very clear or 100% clear.

I’ll do the drawings and send them to you. I’ve found your insights very eye opening.

I know you talk to so many people. I’ll share this one thing and then sign off the e-mail. My oncologist told me to get rid of my vitamins because I couldn’t take them with Stage 4 cancer. My intuition told me to hold on to 1 bottle, that I would be taking them. I couldn’t resist looking at the bottle – they expire at the end of THIS month – November 2021! Originally I thought the PET scan would be done in October and they pushed it back. Now I’m wondering if this is a sign the cancer will be “gone” by the end of November – I guess we will just have to see.

    Love you Bonus Dad!

    Bernie’s Answer:

Doctors treat the diagnosis and not the patient’s experience or story—until they or their family get sick.

A cancer doc apologized to me in a book entitled HEALING LESSONS because of how much help I was when his wife developed cancer, which changed what he thought of me.

Tell them to stop saying negative things—yes, there are statistics but they don’t apply to individuals. And tell them that what they call a spontaneous remission is really self-induced healing.

    Peace,

    Tides

    Don’t fight the river;
    it flows on its own

    ~ Anonymous

We can fight the tide and get nowhere. Trying to move against the tide or swim upstream is ineffective. You are fighting the energy of nature, and it never works to fight against the forces of creation.

When you fight the forces of nature it is either because you are unwise or because you have desires you are unwilling to give up. So you fight the forces of life and get nowhere. Then you become bitter and resentful because life is not flowing the way you want it to.

Why not change the direction of the rudder of your desires, go with the tide, and have the wind at our back? It may not be the most direct way to get where you want to go, but you will be going with the flow of life and becoming a part of the process of creation rather than a force resisting nature.

Use the forces nature provides and save your energy.

    Peace,
    ~ Bernie

    Tree of Life

    Stand Tall & Proud
    Remember your Roots!
Be Content with Your Natural Beauty
    Drink Plenty of Water

    Enjoy the View!
~ Illan Shamir, Advice from a Tree

If we are busily performing deeds, but never stop to reach up for knowledge and wisdom, our Tree of Life will have no branches and many roots.  Without branches, how can it move and respond with the winds of life?  Or if we accumulate great knowledge but perform no deeds, then we are like a tree with many branches but no roots, and we will be blown over by the winds of fortune.

We must see that our Tree of Life contains both wisdom and deeds.  Then our branches will spread and our deep roots will provide support and nourishment.  We will be able to survive the storms and droughts that life presents to us.

Is your Tree of Life blossoming and secure, or do you need to put down more roots or grow more branches?

    Peace,

    Too Heavy

Take a deep breath, count to ten,
and tackle each task one step at a time.

    ~ Linda Shalaway

What do you do when you are asked to carry a stone that is too heavy for you to lift?  What do you do when the problems confronting you seem overwhelming?  You can carry the stone by breaking it into pieces first, and you can do the same thing with your problems.  Do not be overwhelmed; start working on one small piece and you will find the solution.

Break down your overwhelming tasks and problems that seem too heavy to bear.  Tackle each piece, one by one, day by day, until what once seemed overwhelming is handled and completed.  Then you will have a sense of accomplishment and realize just how much you can carry.

When something feels heavy, break it down until one piece of it is light enough to handle.  Begin there.

    Peace,
    - Bernie

    What is Creative Meditation?

This is a guest post by Prudence Sinclair.

    Good morning, lovely you!

I often get emails from people who express their desire to commit to a meditation practice. They hear me and others speak about the benefits meditation offers our body, mind and spirit and feel a deep sense that meditation holds the key to their health and well-being.

But what typically happens is, many of these people will set aside 5-10 minutes each day to retreat to a quiet space to meditate. And it’s harder than they think it will be. And usually around day 5 or 6 they begin to get so frustrated with the whole thing that they just give up.

    Does this sound familiar?

While meditation is a vehicle to relaxation and peace, it can be a nightmare trying to get started!

Why is it so hard to meditate for most people?

Meditation is all about focus. The practice is focusing on the present moment. Being lucid right HERE and right NOW.

But for most of us, our brains are not conditioned for this intense kind of focus. Even when we think we are focused on a specific task for work or a DIY home project, for example, our minds are actually racing with other thoughts at the same time. Start to pay attention to this. Watch how your mind is able to, say, write an email but at the exact same time think about something that happened over the weekend and what you will have for lunch. Your mind is very busy and really good at multitasking!

And this is why people quit meditation. It feels almost impossible for them to quiet their minds and simply focus on the present moment.

You’ve Got to Walk Before You Run

If I were a personal trainer and I had someone come into the gym one day who was middle-aged, 50 pounds overweight and hadn’t exercised in years, I would NOT have them begin a training program by running two miles on the treadmill and then lifting heavy weights. They are simply too out of shape, and they would get hurt and never come back.

As a spiritual trainer of sorts, I also recognize that many people have minds and attention spans that are very much out of shape. I know that if I tell you to sit quietly for 20 minutes and focus only on your breath, that you will “pull a mental muscle” and never come back.

One of the best ways to get your mind and attention in shape is to begin practicing creative meditation.

    What is it?

Creative meditation uses visualization and intention to train the mind to focus on specific outcomes. Most athletes, whether they call it creative imagination or not, use visualization before a game to help them optimize their performance. They will block out all noise and distractions and quiet their own mind from any anxious thoughts and simply focus intently on the outcome they want. They see themselves hitting a hole in one. They see themselves scoring 30 points or throwing a winning touchdown.

Now you may think, “But what does visualizing throwing a touchdown have to do with creating inner peace and perfect health?”

The practice of intense visualization trains your mind to focus on what YOU choose to focus it on. For many, using the imagination in their meditation practice is a gentler way to get started; an easier way to focus their full attention on something other than their breath or a mantra.

    Getting Started with Creative Meditation

Creative meditation is quite simple and very fun! I would suggest starting with 5 minutes each day. Set a timer on your phone.

The kinds of things you can imagine, obviously, are limitless, so choose an intention based on an outcome you’d like to experience in your own life. For example, if you really need to feel calmer in your life (and who doesn’t), then imagine a calming scenario. There are a couple of ways to do this…

If you are completely new to visualization, you may want to start by recreating something in your mind you have already experienced, as opposed to creating something new in your mind from scratch. Focus on a place you have visited that is calm and brought you peace. Is it a beach? A mountain cabin? Your childhood treehouse? Close your eyes and really put yourself there and feel the calmness and tranquility that space offers.

Once you become able to focus on that scenario and hold it in your mind without your monkey brain chiming in with endless thoughts, you can try to create an entirely new calming scenario in your head. For instance, if you are stressed out at work, you may want to visualize being in your office, cubicle or wherever it is you work and feeling calm there. See yourself there and really feel what it would be like to not feel stressed at all but totally calm and at ease.

You can visualize on any intention and outcome you desire.

Want more energy? Imagine yourself with boundless energy. What does that look like to you? Do you climb a flight of stairs without getting out of breath? Do you wake up feeling great? Maybe you start by remembering a younger version of yourself and how you used to be able to play basketball and stay up all night with friends and still have energy the next day to go to college classes.

Maybe your intention is to have a better relationship with your partner. Sit in your quiet space for 5 minutes with eyes closed and visualize what that looks like. Put yourself there and see and feel what that would be like.

You can visualize and imagine any intention and outcome you desire. Over time you will train your mind to be able to FULLY focus on something for 5 minutes. Try upping your time to 7-10 minutes.

Creative meditation is so effective because it is FUN! Using your imagination is fun! That’s why children are so imaginative.

Imagination is more powerful than knowledge.
    ~ Albert Einstein

And perhaps the best part is, since our minds and thoughts really DO create our reality, then we are shaping our reality for the better while training our minds to focus and be still. A win/win!!

If you’ve been struggling with your meditation practice and are thinking about quitting or have already quit, remember that you must walk before you can run. Try creative meditation and see if you don’t find it an easier way to get started.

    Q & A with Bernie – October 4, 2021

    QUESTION FOR BERNIE:

    Dear Bernie,

Is it normal to feel like you have been punched in the gut when your Mom has died? She was my Mom but she was also my very best friend! She is who I turned to when I was first diagnosed with the brain lesions. She was right there with me when the doctor told me that I had three years tops to live.

Mom taught me that it was okay to take chances and be a little different. You taught me how much doctors do not know. Thank you for that. Because of you, I rely on myself now.  Bless you!

    BERNIE’S ANSWER:

Her spirit is still with you.  I felt the same when my wife died almost four years ago and my heart went crazy. Don’t make it tough on your Mom’s spirit.  She wants you to be happy, and enjoys keeping an eye on you.

Tell her to send you a sign—something like a special number of coins, or something you find that is connected to her memory.

    Peace and love,
    Bernie ~ Bonus Dad

    Chauffeur

Being a good chauffeur is more than just knowing how to drive.
    ~ ADELE RUTH

When someone you care about is involved in a serious dilemma, be it physical or psychological, you can be his or her chauffeur.  WE chuckle about his at our therapy meetings because the husbands who come often introduce themselves as their wife’s chauffeur.  They are not there ready to share the emotional experience, but come as a mechanical aide to their wives.

One husband I know sharing the trip with his wife used the chauffeur as his metaphor in a beautiful poem:

But I am separated from my wife’s reality,
The cancer is in her body, not mine.
Like the glass that separates the limousine driver from the passenger.

The two occupants travel together, but I am only the chauffeur.

He understands that he is there to help, but he is like a good chauffeur, following the directions that come from the back seat.  Where they go isn’t up to him.  He has to let his passenger decide the route and the destination.  He and his wife are a special team and know where they are going.

The next time you find yourself acting as a chauffeur, remember to listen to the backseat driver.

    Peace,
    - Bernie
