Finding the Authentic You for the Holidays

Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.
~ Aristotle

ice-skating-rinkThanksgiving is behind us, but December, full of important traditional holidays, is close at hand.  Here are some prescriptions I hope you will fill if you are among the millions of people who find it hard to keep “the blues” at bay during this time of the year.

Rx 1: Find the real you—your “authentic self.”

I’ve said this many, many times over the years—it is essential to know what your true beliefs and values are, as well as identify anything you want to strengthen.  Go deep within and look honestly and lovingly at who you really are, then free this person from all invalid constraints and begin living life to the fullest.

Mortar and PestleRx 2: Stop believing the descriptions of yourself given by family, friends, and others.

When we try not to reveal our real selves, suppressing the frustration with having to act in ways that are fundamentally at odds with our authentic being, we are left with a sense of isolation.  Feeling isolated often translates into depression.

Rx 3: Do not worry about what other people will think of you.

While family and friends might be surprised that you are different, or even refuse to accept the real you (a person new to them), don’t waiver.  Let go of trying to please everyone.

Rx 4: Live and work in your ‘heart zone’ and you will have peace and joy.

Once you are living an authentic life, you will be in your ‘heart zone.’

Rx 5: Learn what you can and can’t control.

Part of finding your authentic self includes clearing out the debris of unrealistic expectations imposed upon you from the outside.  This gives you the ability to take full responsibility for yourself—just you, unencumbered with things that are out of your control.

Rx 6:   Forgive yourself and others, live with hope, faith and love and watch the results in your life and in the lives you touch.

Rx 7: Free your authentic self and start 2013 living life to the fullest—with all of its difficulties and triumphs.

None of these prescriptions have any side effects…they only have positive results for healing the body-mind-spirit connection.

Finally, let’s join together and light a candle of healing light and love for all those whose lives were forever changed by Hurricane Sandy.

Peace to everyone in this Season of Reflection and Renewal,

Bernie
