It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.
~ Mother Teresa
At one time I was caring for a teenage girl who had fallen into a fireplace and had been scarred by the burns. She yelled, “I hate you” at me every day when I dressed her wounds. It pained me to hurt her, and there was nothing I could do to make the scars go away. Several months later, on a scorching summer day, she came into the office in a long-sleeved turtleneck. I asked, “Why are you dressed like that on such a hot day?”
“Because I am ugly,” she replied.
Then I asked, “What are you going to do this summer?”
“Nothing,” she said.
“I know a nursing home that needs aides. Would you consider working there?”
She took the job not knowing that she would have to wear an outfit with short sleeves and a normal neckline. Weeks later when I saw her in the office I asked how things were going and if anyone had asked about her scars. She replied, “No one noticed.”
I said, “When you are giving love, you are beautiful.”
A few years later the young lady called me and said, “My dad died and I am getting married. I want you to be my chosen dad.” I cried and answered, “Yes.” At the wedding we danced to Kenny Rogers singing, “Through the years you never let me down. You turned my life around.”
Today, instead of hiding behind your “scars,” find some way to give love and become beautiful.
Peace,
~ Bernie
