As I sit here, sipping my mug of tea, I am smiling so big because there are quite a few songbirds outside my window serenading me. Since I was a small girl, I have always been incredibly moved by the sound of birdsong. It just makes my heart leap with joy!
And that’s what I want to talk to you about today; about how sound has a major influence on our being and can actually help to heal our minds, hearts and physical bodies.
The History of Sound Healing
Sound healing is an ancient practice that dates back as far as ancient Greece. You may have learned in school that Apollo was the god of music AND medicine. Well, that’s because the ancient Greeks thought of music AS medicine! So much so that it is said Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle believed that music affected one’s emotions and very soul. And did you know that Hippocrates played music for his patients?!
In ancient Egypt, music therapy was a regular practice in their holy temples. Musical instruments were also commonly used to cast out evil spirits from those believed to be possessed. And early native Americans used song and dance in spiritual ceremonies to heal the sick.
In the 1940s, the US military began incorporating music into their treatment plans to help soldiers heal after injury during WW II. Many say this is when our modern “music therapy” began.
And while some people may think that sound healing is “just” an alternative medicine that is either crackpot or woo-woo, think about the fact that today, traditional medicine uses ultrasound as a common medical intervention. You may think of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool, but ultrasound is often used as a form of sound healing.
Physical therapists and chiropractors often use ultrasounds to deliver a high frequency vibration that helps to facilitate healing at a cellular level. Ultrasound can help decrease pain and inflammation, increase circulation, and speed up wound healing.
How Does Sound Healing Work?
Just as ultrasound therapy uses frequency to help bring about positive health outcomes, sound healing using music, gongs, tuning forks or singing bowls works on the very same principle. Physics tells us that everything in the universe is vibrating at a certain rate or frequency.

Human beings are also vibrating at our own frequency or resonance. It is believed that disease in the body is a result of our natural, healthy resonance being “out of tune”. Sound therapy, using a gong for instance, adjusts your brainwaves. Before a session, you will most likely be in a Beta wave state, which is the normal waking state. But the sound/frequency of the gong can shift your brainwaves into Alpha, which is a nice, resting state, Theta, which is where deep and profound relaxation can occur, and even Delta, which is where cellular healing can take place.

Sound therapy has been shown to treat a variety of health conditions such as sleep and anxiety disorders. It can also help with emotional issues like anger and depression.

Some of these channels also offer the music in different frequencies or Hertz to help bring about an even deeper level of healing.
