From a reader to Bernie about his book Love, Medicine, and Miracles
Dear Dr. Siegel,
In 1991, your book helped saved me. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I carried AND followed the suggestions contained within it, both subtle and otherwise.
But, the miracle most precious to me was on the day of surgery! You see, I had interviewed anesthesiologists. I was precise in my requests, such as No Matter What they found while operating, they were to Only speak in the affirmative, such as, “ You are fine, well, whole, etc.”. I even made the doctor promise to play the healing instrumental tape a musician friend had made for me.
All was set for January 31, 1991. The time of surgery was changed to my birth time. But when an anesthesiologist I did not know walked into my room, for the first time since my diagnosis, I felt fear. The one I handpicked had an emergency and he was his replacement.
I told the new doctor of my concerns. The former doctor was in total agreement with my requests and promised to even keep the healing music playing and speak only in the affirmative. And then it happened! He told me that not only was he in TOTAL agreement with my requests, he had actually worked with YOU at one time! He was very familiar with your book and said to me that he wished all patients felt the same way!
Needless to say, I never forgot him, or you, and I thought it was about time I thanked you directly instead of saying thank you in my thoughts! All that transpired was a direct result of your experience shared with your book.
Thank You Dr. Siegel. I never forgot you, nor will I ever.
Bernie’s Response:
God bless you. You are now my therapist. I am smiling at age 91 because of you.
My wife died several years ago in her sleep, and I still am here living my sermon and lessons. I can see what happens to the patients who don’t love themselves, their lives and their bodies. And I have an angel named George who keeps me company and protects me when I need him.
I wish I were hugging you right now.
God bless you,
~ Bernie Siegel
